The Human Design Gates of Leo Season
The story of the Lion as told by the micro-seasons of the ancient I'Ching
As the Sun moves into the part of the sky known as Leo, the Lion awakens: the keeper of fire, radiance, and the unwavering heart. With a mane that crowns and a spirit that shines, the lion strides forward into life’s fullness, casting light on the path of self-expression and sovereignty.
Through the lenses of Human Design, the I Ching, and the Gene Keys, let’s take a journey through the 6 gates the sun transits through during Leo season. Each evolutionary step is a vessel for courage, creativity, and the deep intelligence of the embodied presence of the lion. These gates call us to honor joy as a sacred act, to tend the fire at the center of the self, and to lead with warmth and integrity.
Let’s get into the 6 energies that make up the season of the lion.

Leo I: Gate 56 – The Wanderer’s Tale (July 19-24)
I Ching: The Wanderer (Lu) – Fire over Mountain (☲ over ☶)
Human Design: The Gate of Stimulation
Gene Key 56: Distraction → Enrichment → Intoxication
At the cusp where Cancer season gives way to Leo, the Lion begins to awaken. Its heart calls for more than shelter. It seeks to break out of it’s proverbial shell, to hit the road, seek adventure, and tell the stories that emerged during the inward phase of Cancer season. The lion cub is born in Gate 56: fire traveling across a mountain, a place where curiosity ignites and the desire to roam awakens.
The Wanderer’s path begins with the desire to move. Leo steps forward from the tenderness of Cancer’s sanctuary, restless and eager to experience life firsthand, to tell its stories and hear tales from others in the pride. This is the gate of the storyteller, the one who gathers impressions and weaves them into meaning. The hunger here is not simply for travel, but for experiences that spark, provoke, and enrich identity.
In the shadow of this gate, this hunger becomes distraction, a scattering of energy, chasing one stimulation after another without depth. The young Lion, untethered, risks burning its fuel on empty pursuits. But within this very restlessness lies a gift: enrichment. When experience is metabolized and shaped by the heart’s wisdom, every journey becomes nourishment, and every encounter becomes a story worth telling.
At its highest frequency, Gate 56 radiates intoxication. This is not in the sense of excess, but as a luminous presence that enlivens others. This is the charisma of one who has lived, who has wandered with purpose, and who carries the warmth of those stories as embers to share.
Leo’s fire gains direction here. The Lion learns that radiance is cultivated by moving through life with curiosity and courage, gathering what enriches and releasing what distracts it. This is the flame that illuminates the way forward, fueled by lived experience, steady at the heart.
Leo II: Gate 31 – The Voice of Influence (July 25-30)
I Ching: Influence (Xian) – Lake over Mountain (☱ over ☶)
Human Design: The Gate of Influence
Gene Key 31: Arrogance → Leadership → Humility
After wandering and gathering stories in Gate 56, the young Lion begins to feel the next pull. Exploration has filled her heart with experiences and impressions, but now something deeper is rising. The Lion is ready to speak, to guide, and to step forward where others can see and follow.
Gate 31 is where the Lion’s voice becomes the tool of leadership. This is about using words to shape direction, to help the group move together with purpose.
The shadow here is arrogance, when confidence becomes inflated or influence is pursued just to be admired. The young Lion may learn quickly that being seen is different from being trusted.
As the Lion matures, leadership starts to take on a clearer shape. True influence happens when words meet the moment, when the Lion is aligned with what the pride actually needs. There is power in waiting for recognition, listening carefully, and letting the voice reflect the wisdom gained along the way. The gift here is a steady, generous leadership that holds presence and integrity.
In the I Ching, this is Influence, pictured as Lake over Mountain. The mountain is stable, reliable, strong. The lake is reflective and open. The leader who holds both qualities becomes magnetic and effective.
At this point in the Lion’s journey, the fire that initially rushed outward after the season of the crab is now steady and contained. The Lion is stepping into its role as guide, learning that leadership is about trust, timing, and care. This is influence that feels earned, that comes from showing up with consistency and heart.
The Lion grows here, understanding that presence itself can inspire the pride to move forward together.
Leo III: Gate 33 – Retreat into the Den (July 31-August 5)
I Ching: Retreat (Dun) – Heaven over Mountain (☰ over ☶)
Human Design: The Gate of Privacy
Gene Key 33: Forgetting → Mindfulness → Revelation
After stepping into leadership at Gate 31, the Lion reaches a quieter, more reflective chapter in Gate 33. The roar softens, and the Lion, having spoken, now retreats into their den listen again. This is the Gate of Privacy, sometimes called the Keeper of Stories, a time when experience is processed and integrated.
At this stage, the Lion begins to understand that wisdom isn’t just about speaking or being seen. It also comes from knowing when to retreat, when to pause and reflect, and when to let the dust of experience settle.
The shadow of Gate 33 is forgetting, when we move so fast that memories fade before their meaning can be absorbed. The young Lion may have rushed from one experience to the next, eager for attention and growth, but here it learns the value of stillness.
The gift of this gate is mindfulness. It teaches that before we can offer our stories to others, we need to understand them ourselves. The Lion gathers its memories, reflects on where it has been, and begins to weave meaning from its past.
At its highest expression, this gate holds revelation. The Lion sees clearly how experience shapes wisdom, how privacy and retreat allow something deeper and more potent to emerge.
In the I Ching, this is the hexagram known as Retreat. The image is Heaven over Mountain, suggesting the strength that comes from knowing when to withdraw. This taking space to integrate and prepare for what comes next, not running away.
At this point in the Lion’s journey, fire is steady and centered in the hearth. The Lion is no longer chasing the next thing. It understands that influence is strengthened by reflection, and that wisdom grows in quiet places. The Lion retreats to remember, to honor its story, and to prepare for the next time it is called to lead.
Leo IV: Gate 7 – The Path of the Guide (August 6- 11)
I Ching: The Army (Shi) – Earth over Water (☷ over ☵)
Human Design: The Gate of the Role of the Self
Gene Key 7: Division → Guidance → Virtue
When the Lion reflected and integrated his story in Gate 33, something shifted. The Lion now no longer thinks only about their own voice or experience. They feel the pull to serve something larger. This is Gate 7, the path of the guide, where leadership becomes less about being in the spotlight and more about walking alongside others.
Gate 7 belongs to the self’s role in collective direction. Here, the Lion begins to understand that even though it can lead, it does not walk alone. There is a deeper responsibility at play.
The shadow of this gate is division, when leadership fractures or isolates. The immature Lion might have believed it needed to control the pride or stand apart, but here it realizes that true guidance is relational. The gift of this gate is guidance, the ability to recognize when and how to help the group find its way. The Lion steps into this role with care, using its influence not to dominate but to offer a steady presence that others can follow.
At its highest frequency, Gate 7 embodies virtue. This is leadership that aligns with collective well-being. The Lion leads with integrity, humility, and wisdom, serving the greater good rather than its own ambition.
In the I Ching, this is known as The Army. The image is Earth over Water, evoking disciplined movement rooted in responsive flow. A guide does not forge ahead recklessly. It feels the currents beneath and shapes the path with patience and awareness.
At this point in the Lion’s evolution, the fire that once burned purely for self-expression is refined into a warmth that sustains community.
Leo V: Gate 4 – Questions & Answers (August 12-16)
II Ching: Youthful Folly (Meng) – Mountain over Water (☶ over ☵)
Human Design: The Gate of Formulization
Gene Key 4: Intolerance → Understanding → Forgiveness
As the Lion continues to grow up, it reaches Gate 4, where the mind awakens with questions. After learning to explore, inspire, reflect, and guide, the Lion now wants clarity. It craves answers. Gate 4 is the place where the Lion sharpens its mental tools and tries to make sense of what it has experienced.
This is the gate where we seek certainty. The shadow here is intolerance. It’s that feeling when the Lion gets impatient with complexity or ambiguity and rushes toward easy conclusions. The young Lion might grasp for the quickest solution or impose its logic to avoid sitting in the unknown.
But, as with all of these energies, Gate 4 also carries a gift: understanding. As the Lion matures, it learns that understanding takes time. Answers are rarely simple, and wisdom requires curiosity and humility. The Lion begins to see patterns, make connections, and organize knowledge so it can serve itself and others.
At its highest frequency, we arrive at forgiveness. The Lion releases its tight grip on needing everything to make sense and accepts the imperfection of life. It forgives itself, forgives others, and finds freedom in letting go of rigid explanations.
In the I Ching, this is Youthful Folly, the image of Mountain over Water. It evokes a theme of holding steady while emotions swirl below, of taking time to learn before rushing to act. The wise Lion learns that understanding comes from asking better questions and sitting patiently with what emerges.
The Lion can now balance passion with wisdom, allowing its mind to serve and work with the heart rather than override it.
Leo VI: Gate 29 – True Commitment (August 17-22)
I Ching: The Abysmal (Kan) – Water over Water (☵ over ☵)
Human Design: The Gate of Saying Yes
Gene Key 29: Half-Heartedness → Commitment → Devotion
The Lion, having gathered its stories, found its voice, learning to guide, and wrestling with deeper understanding, now arrives at Gate 29: the gate where commitment is tested. This is where the Lion learns the power of a true yes.
In the HD bodygraph, Gate 29 sits in the sacral center, the source of life force and response. Here, it is not about mentally thinking through a decision, but feeling a full-bodied yes or no in your sacral.
The shadow of this gate is half-heartedness, when the Lion says yes from obligation or fear of missing out, then loses its energy along the way. The young Lion may have scattered itself thin, chasing every opportunity, but now it begins to understand that commitment is sacred.
The gift of Gate 29 is true commitment. The Lion learns what it means to say yes with its whole being. This is not about saying yes to everything, but about entering fully into what matters. The Lion discovers that when it commits from the right place, life force follows, and challenges can be met with resilience. At its highest frequency, this gate is about devotion. The Lion’s yes becomes an offering, a wholehearted engagement with life, rooted in presence and purpose. There is no hesitation here, just a steady alignment with what calls.
In the I Ching, this is The Abysmal, water over water, symbolizing the depth and persistence required to move through life’s challenges. The wise Lion learns that commitment is what carries it across difficult terrain, that devotion itself becomes the path.
At the end of Leo season, the Lion deeply knows where to invest its energy. The roar is no longer scattered or impulsive. The Lion’s yes is clear, full, and enduring, guiding it forward with confidence and grace.
The Lion’s Impact: Conscious Leadership
The Lion’s path through Leo season is a journey of maturing fire. It begins at Gate 56 where curiosity and adventure spark the desire to experience life fully. At Gate 31, the Lion discovers influence, learning that true leadership is rooted in trust and timing. In Gate 33, the Lion turns inward, gathering stories and finding wisdom through reflection. Gate 7 teaches the Lion to guide, showing that leadership is relational and attentive to the needs of the collective. At Gate 4, the Lion sharpens its mind, seeking understanding and embracing the humility of learning. Finally, in Gate 29, the Lion aligns its yes, embodying wholehearted commitment and devotion.
By the end of this passage, the Lion’s fire is no longer reckless or scattered. It has become steady, generous, and aware. It’s fixed fire, one that that knows when to shine, when to guide, when to reflect, and when to commit. Through these gates, Leo season invites us all to tend our own flame with care, to honor the path from bold expression to conscious leadership, and to recognize that radiance becomes meaningful when it is lived with integrity.
Next, the sun moves forward into the realm of the Harvest Maiden Virgo, and we are invited to use our inner radiance as a service to the larger world.
